The Jessie Armstead Celebrity Hoops Classic
by JC - 06/10/07

Felton Delaware - On a scorching hot day in downtown Felton, Delaware, Ryan Clark was again teamed up with the likes of Marcus Washington, Joe Salave’a, Phillip Daniels, and Demetric Evans. Unfortunately it was only to join his old teammates in a charity basketball game. And in doing so he made all Redskins’ fans present wonder how the Redskins’ front office let him get away. But more on Ryan later...

Promoter Doug Lawson and ex-Washington Redskin/New York Giants linebacker Jessie Armstead joined forces to put together a fun filled afternoon in the cozy confines of the Lake Forest High school gymnasium. The event featured current and former Redskins players competing against Lake Forest, a team of local amateur basketball players.

After watching the Lake Forest complete their warm-ups, it was apparent that they had some players with college level experience. The redskins players would need to bring their A game to be competitive.

Led by Coach Marcus Washington and players Phillip Daniels, Joe Salave’a’, Demetric Evans, Ryan Clark, Jessie Armstead and Reggie Branch – the good guys were ready for action.

Phillip Daniels showed he had hops from the opening tip. Ryan Clark ran the point with ease popping 3 pointers, dishing inside to Phillip Daniels or to his other shooting guard; Joe Salave’a (that’s right, big Joe burying a three pointer was a true sight). Demetric was cleaning up underneath or hitting from the outside along with Armstead. The Lake Forest squad hung in there for a while, but they could not contain Daniels or Clark. The Redskins players eventually built a 22 point lead. The day was capped off by two thunderous jams towards the end by Daniels. The Lake Forest squad did manage to slice the deficit to come within 10 points, falling 86-76.

“Mouth of the South” Clark lived up to his moniker. He was talking smack with everyone, and got teed up at the end which led him to start throwing some chairs ala Bobby Knight. But it was all in fun. He even had a dance contest at halftime w/ the kids, cracking up with his teammates. You can definitely see how he is missed in the locker room.

Thanks to Doug Lawson and Jessie Armstead for putting the event together.
